telc C1 vs telc C1 Hochschule

The structure and the points are identical; the difference is the world the texts come from. The general C1 tests everyday and professional language, the Hochschule version tests academic language and is the one universities accept.

Last updated: 2026-09-14

telc has two separate exams at C1: the general 'telc Deutsch C1' and 'telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule'. The names look alike, they are often confused, and registering for the wrong one can cost an applicant to a German university an entire semester.

The good news: the two exams share a skeleton. Same sections, same timing, same point distribution. Preparing for the format of one prepares you for the format of the other. The difference lies in where the texts and tasks come from.

What is the same?

Both exams have four main parts: reading with language elements, listening, writing and speaking. The written part takes about two hundred minutes with a break after the language elements section.

The point distribution is the same too: reading forty-eight, language elements twenty-two, listening forty-eight, writing forty-eight and speaking forty-eight. Two hundred and fourteen points in total. To pass, the written and oral parts must each clear their own threshold.

The difficulty is considered comparable; both measure level C1 of the European framework.

Which one for university admission?

The admission decision belongs to the university. The general picture below is for information; always read the language requirements page of the programme you are applying to, as some accept only specific certificates.

For bachelor's and master's applications in Germany the language certificates usually requested are TestDaF, DSH and telc C1 Hochschule; the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 is also accepted. The general telc C1 is often not on that list.

So if your goal is university, register directly for the Hochschule version. Taking the general C1 and asking afterwards whether it counts usually means a second exam fee and a semester's delay.

For residence procedures, job applications and professional recognition, on the other hand, the general C1 is used without trouble and the Hochschule version is not needed.

How to prepare

  • Learn the format once. Section order, timing and point distribution are the same in both exams, so this work pays off either way.
  • Practise the language elements section separately. Those twenty-two items lose the most points in the least time and rest on recognising patterns.
  • Build academic vocabulary. This is the gap Hochschule candidates have to close: the language of method, data, results and discussion.
  • Practise mediation. Summarising and evaluating a text or a graph in your own words is the distinctive task of the Hochschule version.
  • Treat speaking as a separate group. A high written score does not rescue the oral threshold.

Which one does Level Exams simulate?

The C1 mock exams here simulate the general 'telc Deutsch C1', not the Hochschule version. Candidates sitting Hochschule should also work through that version's official practice test.

Our general C1 mock exams were checked section by section against the official telc Deutsch C1 Übungstest: the same section order, the same timings, the same item counts, the same point distribution and the same pass rule.

Because the two exams share a skeleton, these mock exams also help Hochschule candidates directly with exam flow, time management, language elements practice and the oral threshold. The only gap left to close is the academic text world and the mediation task; work on that with the official Hochschule practice test.

Frequently asked questions

›Which is harder, telc C1 or C1 Hochschule?

The difficulty is considered comparable; both measure C1 and share a structure. What feels hard is the content area you are not used to: academic texts in one case, professional language in the other.

›Is the general telc C1 enough for university?

Not at most universities. The certificates usually accepted are TestDaF, DSH, telc C1 Hochschule and Goethe C2. Read your programme's own list.

›How many points is C1 Hochschule and how do you pass?

Two hundred and fourteen points in total: reading 48, language elements 22, listening 48, writing 48, speaking 48. The written and oral parts must each clear their own threshold.

›I have the general C1. Can I convert it to Hochschule?

Certificates are not converted; you have to sit the Hochschule exam separately. Because the format is the same, most of your preparation still counts.

›Do the C1 mock exams here prepare me for Hochschule?

For flow and time management, yes, since the structure, timing, points and pass rule are the same. The content area is general C1, so also work through the official Hochschule practice test for academic texts and mediation.
