B1

telc Deutsch B1 exam (Zertifikat Deutsch)

The level required for German citizenship and permanent residence. Five sections, two separate pass rules, mock exams in the real format.

telc Deutsch B1 is the most requested German certificate in Germany: naturalisation (Einbürgerung), the permanent residence permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis) and many vocational-training applications require B1. The exam tests whether you can communicate independently in everyday and work situations and state and justify an opinion.

Structurally it differs from A1 and A2. There are five sections rather than four: reading, language elements (Sprachbausteine), listening, writing and speaking. Points are not spread evenly, and the pass rule has two groups: the written sections combined and the oral section must each reach a set percentage. Doing very well in writing and failing in speaking is possible.

Before each listening part there is silent time to read the items; before the speaking section there is a twenty-minute preparation room. The writing task is a single text (a letter or email) scored with telc's own raw-point scale.

Who needs it

German citizenship (Einbürgerung)

Naturalisation requires German at B1; telc B1 is among the accepted certificates.

Permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis)

Sufficient German for the permanent permit is usually B1.

Vocational training and jobs

Training places and many employers ask for B1; some health professions go up to B2.

Family reunification at a higher level

Some reunification cases ask for B1 instead of A1.

Exam structure

The table is the structure of the B1 mock exams on Level Exams, verified against the official telc Zertifikat Deutsch Übungstest. Sections run in this order, one way only; the reading time in listening is included in the recording as silence.

B1 has two separate thresholds: the written sections combined and the oral section must each pass on their own. The Level Exams result report shows both groups separately, so it is never unclear which one you missed.

Leseverstehen · Reading

Three parts: matching short texts to headings, questions on an article, and matching adverts to situations. Texts are at everyday-newspaper level.

Sprachbausteine · Language Elements

Choosing the correct grammatical form from three options for gaps in a text, then filling gaps from a word bank. Every word in the bank is used only once.

Hörverstehen · Listening

An interview, short announcements and a discussion; played once or twice depending on the part. Silent reading time is given before each part.

Schriftlicher Ausdruck · Writing

Replying to an incoming email in a semi-formal register, covering four points. Scored on telc's discrete scale; skipping a point entirely is the most expensive mistake.

Mündlicher Ausdruck · Speaking

Getting to know each other, giving and discussing an opinion on a topic, and planning something together. Twenty minutes of preparation with notes allowed.

telc B1 sample questions with answers

One sample from each section, no sign-up needed: instructions in German as in the real exam, solutions in English. Enough to see the format; to feel the time pressure and get scored, take a full mock exam.

These samples follow the telc Deutsch B1 (Zertifikat Deutsch) format. Despite the similar names, the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and the ÖSD Zertifikat B1 are a different exam: a single exam developed jointly by the Goethe-Institut and ÖSD, with a different format. Level Exams has separate mock exams for it. The questions were written by Level Exams, are not taken from any official exam and do not appear in our mock exams.

Reading (Lesen)

Part 1

Options

  • a) Später in die Schule: ein Versuch gegen müde Jugendliche
  • b) Mehr Schwimmkurse für Kinder
  • c) Leihen statt kaufen: Bücherei bietet mehr als Bücher
  • d) Schule erlaubt Handys im Unterricht
  • e) Hallenbad wird ein Jahr lang renoviert
  1. 1. Welche Überschrift passt zu Text 1?→ ___
  2. 2. Welche Überschrift passt zu Text 2?→ ___
  3. 3. Welche Überschrift passt zu Text 3?→ ___

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. c) Leihen statt kaufen: Bücherei bietet mehr als Bücher — 'verleiht seit Montag nicht nur Bücher, sondern auch Werkzeug, Zelte und Nähmaschinen': the library now lends things as well as books. Headline c says this in other words. 'Leihen statt kaufen' is not in the text, but the first sentence ('muss sie nicht mehr kaufen') expresses the same idea. The right headline usually summarises the main idea instead of repeating the text's words.
  2. 2. a) Später in die Schule: ein Versuch gegen müde Jugendliche — 'beginnt der Unterricht ... erst um neun Uhr statt um acht' and 'ob die Jugendlichen dann ausgeschlafener sind': in a one-year trial, lessons start an hour later. Headline a talks about 'müde Jugendliche', the opposite of 'ausgeschlafen', so it makes the same point. d ('Schule erlaubt Handys im Unterricht') is a topic distractor: school and the word 'Unterricht' appear, but the text never mentions phones.
  3. 3. e) Hallenbad wird ein Jahr lang renoviert — 'schließt ... für zwölf Monate' and 'Das Dach ... muss erneuert werden' → 'ein Jahr lang renoviert'. Trap b: 'Schwimmkurse für Kinder' appears word for word, but there are not more courses; they simply move to the pool in Neudorf. A headline that repeats a phrase from the text is often the trap; it has to fit the whole text, not one detail.

In the real exam this part has 5 texts and 10 headlines (a–j); each headline is used once at most, so 5 are left over. Each correct match is worth 5 points. Put the main idea of each text into one sentence of your own first, then look at the headlines. Don't jump at a headline just because it repeats words from the text.

Betreff: Endlich in der neuen Wohnung

Liebe Johanna,

wir 1 vor drei Wochen endlich in die neue Wohnung umgezogen. Sie ist größer als die alte, und die Kinder haben jetzt jeder ein eigenes Zimmer. Am besten gefällt mir die Küche, 2 wir selbst ausgesucht haben.

3 der Umzug ziemlich anstrengend war, hat alles gut geklappt. Unsere neuen Nachbarn haben uns sogar beim Tragen geholfen.

Ich freue mich schon 4 deinen Besuch im Mai! Schreib mir bitte bald, wann genau du ankommst.

Viele Grüße

Serkan

    • b) Obwohl
    • c) Weil
  4. 4. Lücke 4
    • a) über
    • b) an
    • c) auf

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. a) sind — 'umziehen' is a verb of changing place, so its Perfekt uses 'sein': wir sind umgezogen. 'haben' is the most common mistake. 'werden' would make a passive or future sentence, which does not fit 'vor drei Wochen', a clear past time.
  2. 2. c) die — A relative pronoun takes its gender from the noun it refers to (die Küche → feminine) and its case from its role in the relative clause: 'wir haben die Küche ausgesucht' → accusative. Feminine accusative = die. The trap is 'den', chosen by learners who remember 'accusative = den', which is only true for masculine nouns. 'der' is feminine dative/genitive.
  3. 3. b) Obwohl — The verb ('war') is at the end, so this is a subordinate clause and needs a conjunction. The meaning is a contrast: the move was tiring, but everything went well → obwohl. 'Trotzdem' means something similar but is an adverb followed directly by the verb: 'Der Umzug war anstrengend. Trotzdem hat alles geklappt.' 'Weil' gives a reason, which does not fit.
  4. 4. c) auf — 'sich freuen auf' means looking forward to something that has not happened yet; 'sich freuen über' means being happy about something that has happened or that you have. The visit is in May, in the future → auf. 'an' is not used with this verb. At B1, learn these verbs together with their prepositions.

In the real exam Sprachbausteine has two parts: Teil 1 has 10 grammar gaps in a text (a/b/c), Teil 2 has 10 gaps filled from a list of 15 words (a–o). Each gap is worth 1.5 points, 30 points in total. Look at the whole sentence, not just the words next to the gap: where is the verb, what gender is the noun, which case is needed?

Listening (Hören)

Part 2

Sie hören ein Gespräch. Entscheiden Sie bei den Aussagen 1–3: richtig oder falsch. Sie hören das Gespräch zweimal.

Sie hören ein Gespräch im Radio. Eine Moderatorin spricht mit Herrn Wolter über seinen Chor.

In the real exam the recording plays twice on its own and cannot be paused; here you can replay it as often as you like.

Transcript

Moderatorin: Bei uns im Studio ist heute Herr Wolter. Er leitet seit zwei Jahren einen Chor, in dem jeder mitsingen darf. Herr Wolter, wie ist die Idee entstanden?

Herr Wolter: Viele Leute haben mir erzählt, dass sie gern singen, aber sich nicht trauen. In der Schule hat man ihnen gesagt, dass sie keine gute Stimme haben. Bei uns muss niemand vorsingen, und man muss auch keine Noten lesen können.

Moderatorin: Wie oft proben Sie?

Richtig / Falsch

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. Falsch — 'Bei uns muss niemand vorsingen': 'niemand' turns the statement around. The distractor is that 'vorsingen' appears both in the statement and in the recording. Hearing the word is not enough; you have to catch the negation that comes with it (niemand, kein, nicht).
  2. 2. Richtig — 'Am Anfang waren wir nur acht, heute kommen fast vierzig Leute.' The statement uses no numbers, but going from eight to forty means 'more'. In B1 listening the correct answer is often phrased in other words like this.
  3. 3. Falsch — 'Die Proben sind kostenlos.' The trap follows right after: hearing 'Spenden' (donations), you might think members pay. But donations are only collected at concerts, for music stands, not for rehearsals.

In the real exam Teil 2 has 10 statements. Before the recording starts you have 60 seconds to read them, and you hear the conversation twice: mark what you are sure of the first time and check the rest the second time. In telc B1 all three listening parts are Richtig/Falsch; the short texts in Teil 1 are played only once. On this page you can replay the recording freely; in the full mock exams on Level Exams the audio runs on its own and cannot be paused, as in the real exam.

Writing (Schreiben)

Ihre Freundin Carla hat Ihnen eine E-Mail geschrieben. Antworten Sie auf die E-Mail. Schreiben Sie etwas zu allen vier Punkten.

E-Mail

Von: Carla

Betreff: Eine große Entscheidung

Hallo,

Carla

Points to cover

Selin

In the real exam the writing section has a single task: you reply to an e-mail and must cover ALL four points; if one is missing, your 'Aufgabenbewältigung' score drops. The text is scored on three criteria (task fulfilment, communicative form, grammar and spelling), each on an A/B/C/D scale; the section is worth 45 points in total. Aim for 80–120 words. The greeting and closing (Liebe Carla … Viele Grüße) count towards communicative form. Giving each point its own paragraph, as in the sample, makes sure none is skipped. On Level Exams your text is scored by AI against the official criteria for this level.

Speaking (Sprechen)

Part 3

Ihr Freund Tobias hat sich beim Fußball das Bein gebrochen und darf zwei Wochen lang die Wohnung nicht verlassen. Sie möchten ihm zusammen mit Ihrer Partnerin/Ihrem Partner helfen. Planen Sie gemeinsam, was Sie tun. Machen Sie Vorschläge, reagieren Sie auf die Vorschläge Ihrer Partnerin/Ihres Partners und einigen Sie sich am Ende.

Wann besuchen?Einkäufe – wer? wie oft?Was mitbringen?Wie ihm die Zeit vertreiben?Wer füttert seine Katze?

Sample answer

  • Wann besuchen? – einen Vorschlag machen „Wie wäre es, wenn wir Tobias gleich am Samstagvormittag besuchen?“ — 'Wie wäre es, wenn …' is a polite, typical way to make a suggestion. Alternatives: 'Ich schlage vor, dass …', 'Wir könnten …'.
  • Einkäufe – zustimmen und Aufgaben übernehmen „Gute Idee! Dann übernehme ich die Einkäufe am Montag und am Donnerstag.“ — Instead of just saying 'ja', agree and take on a concrete task; that moves the plan forward.
  • Was mitbringen? – einen Gegenvorschlag machen „Blumen finde ich nicht so praktisch. Wollen wir ihm nicht lieber ein paar Bücher oder ein Brettspiel mitbringen?“ — Instead of a bare 'Nein', give a short reason and then your own idea with 'lieber'. Polite disagreement also earns points.
  • Wie ihm die Zeit vertreiben? – nach der Meinung fragen „Was meinst du, sollen wir am Wochenende einen Spieleabend bei ihm machen?“ — Asking your partner's opinion keeps the conversation two-way. Teil 3 assesses planning together, not a monologue.
  • Wer füttert seine Katze? – ablehnen mit Begründung „Am Dienstag kann ich leider nicht, da habe ich bis acht Uhr Kurs. Könntest du an dem Tag zu ihm fahren?“ — When you say no, give a reason and offer a solution straight away; 'Könntest du …?' (Konjunktiv II) makes the request softer.
  • Sich einigen – zusammenfassen „Also, dann machen wir es so: Du fütterst die Katze, ich kaufe ein, und am Samstag besuchen wir ihn zusammen.“ — Summarising the plan at the end shows that you reached an agreement, which is the actual goal of the task.

In the real exam the speaking section is taken in pairs, with 20 minutes of preparation beforehand. In Teil 3 the notes on the card guide the conversation: make suggestions, react to your partner's ideas (agree, disagree, offer alternatives) and reach a joint plan at the end. Teil 3 is worth 30 of the section's 75 points; expressive ability, task fulfilment, grammatical accuracy and pronunciation are scored separately. On Level Exams an AI partner plays the other role and your answer is scored against the official criteria for this level.

Which exams exist at B1: telc, Goethe and ÖSD

B1 is the most-certified level — the threshold for residence and citizenship applications. There are two formats here: telc's single-sitting exam, and "Zertifikat B1", developed JOINTLY by Goethe and ÖSD and made up of four independent modules.

telc Deutsch B1 (Zertifikat Deutsch)

We simulate this format

One sitting: the written sections and the oral section belong to the same exam, and each must clear its own threshold. Language elements (Sprachbausteine) exist as a section of their own.

Every B1 mock exam here is built on this format.

Goethe-Zertifikat B1

We simulate this format

Modular: reading, listening, writing and speaking are four independent modules. Each is scored out of 100 and passed at 60, with no compensation between them; each is certified separately, and a failed module can be repeated on its own. Developed JOINTLY by the Goethe-Institut, the ÖSD and the University of Fribourg — identical to ÖSD Zertifikat B1.

The ÖSD B1 mock exams here are exactly this format: same tasks, same timing, same scoring. If you are preparing for Goethe B1, take those.

ÖSD Zertifikat B1

We simulate this format

The SAME exam as Goethe-Zertifikat B1 ("Zertifikat B1", developed jointly): four independent modules, 100 points each, passed at 60. Only the certifying institution differs.

Every ÖSD B1 mock exam here is built on this format.

For citizenship, telc B1, Goethe B1, ÖSD B1 and the integration course's final exam DTZ (with a B1 result) are all accepted. Which you sit mostly depends on whether you are in an integration course — if you are, the DTZ comes at the end anyway and is free for most participants. The mocks here come in both formats: telc B1 and the joint Goethe/ÖSD Zertifikat B1.

How Level Exams prepares you for this exam

We do not hand you practice questions; we put you through the exam. Our B1 mock exams were checked section by section against the official telc Übungstest: timing, order, number of items, points and the pass rule are the same as on exam day. Nothing should surprise you there.

Real timing, locked order

Sections open in the real exam order and there is no going back. The clock runs on the server, so closing the browser does not pause it. You get a warning five minutes before the end, and the answer sheet saves every ten seconds.

Details →

Listening that behaves like the exam

Recordings were produced with natural German voices and distinct speakers. They play exactly as many times as in the exam, cannot be paused, and the instructions and answer pauses are inside the audio, including the 'Nummer eins' announcements.

Real evaluation for writing and speaking

Your text and your recorded answers are scored by AI against the criteria telc uses at this level; you get a score per criterion, corrections and an explanation in your language. Each text is scored twice and averaged, so there is no random grading.

Result report and weak topics

After the exam you see points per section, whether you passed, and which topics cost you points. Weaknesses that repeat across attempts are flagged separately, so what to study next is a measurement, not a guess.

Lessons before, revision after

In the lesson portal every topic is taught as vocabulary, reading, writing, listening and speaking in that order; vocabulary cards have pictures and pronunciation. Going back to the lesson behind a weak topic is one click.

Everything in German, help in your language

Exam content and instructions are in German, as in the real exam; the interface, explanations and feedback are in English or Turkish. You will not see the instructions for the first time on exam day.

How to prepare for B1

  1. 1

    Sort the word bank first

Group the bank words by type (conjunction, preposition, pronoun); each is used once, so cross them out as you place them.

  2. 2

Actually read during the reading time

Use the silence before each recording to read the items and mark key words; while listening you then know what you are waiting for.

  3. 3

    Give the letter four headings

Write the four points one under the other during preparation and give each at least two sentences; a missing point lowers the score.

  4. 4

    Use the speaking preparation

In twenty minutes write three opinions and three reasons for the discussion, and two suggestions for the planning task.

  5. 5

    Train the two groups separately

If your written total is fine, work on speaking, and vice versa; the exam asks you to pass through two doors.

Frequently asked questions

›How many sections and points does telc B1 have?

Five sections; the total and the weighting per section are in the table above with their real values. Points are not spread evenly.

›Can I pass the written part and fail the oral?

Yes. The written sections combined and the oral section must each reach a set percentage; if one does not, the exam is not passed.

›Is Zertifikat Deutsch the same as telc B1?

Yes, 'Zertifikat Deutsch' is the other name of telc Deutsch B1.

›DTZ or telc B1 for citizenship?

The DTZ at the end of the Integrationskurs counts if completed at B1; telc Deutsch B1 is also accepted. The formats differ, so practise in the format of the exam you will sit.

›Is there preparation time for speaking?

Yes, twenty minutes before the oral section; Level Exams gives the same time and lets you take notes.

›Does Level Exams issue a certificate?

No. Results are presented as a result report; the official certificate comes only from licensed telc exam centres.

›How long does the telc B1 exam take, and what is the exam pattern?

The written sections run back to back in one sitting; speaking is a separate session, with preparation time at some levels. The order and timing of the sections are in the table above with their real values, and the 'Exam flow and timing' page shows all levels side by side.

›How much does the telc B1 exam cost?

The fee is set by the exam centre and varies by city and country; centres in Turkey advertise roughly €190 for A1 in 2026, higher levels somewhat more, and centres in Germany vary widely. Check the centre's own page for the current figure. Level Exams mock exams are separate from that fee, and the first one is free.

›How long is a telc certificate valid?

The certificate itself does not expire. Visa authorities, however, usually require a certificate whose exam date is not older than one year; check the current requirement of the office you are applying to.

›Where can I find a telc B1 sample paper (PDF)?

The official practice exam (Übungstest) can be downloaded free from telc's website as a PDF with audio files. This page also has a free B1 sample PDF made by Level Exams (with answer sheet and answer key) and sample questions with solutions. With a PDF you have to keep time, resist pausing and mark it yourself. The B1 mock exams on Level Exams put the same exam pattern in your browser with real timing, uninterrupted audio and automatic scoring; the first one is free.
