telc Deutsch B2 exam

The language of work and professions. Five sections, a choice of writing task, single-play listening; mock exams in the real format.

telc Deutsch B2 tests whether you can understand complex texts, discuss fluently and naturally, and build arguments in opinion pieces. In Germany, professional recognition (especially in health care), skilled job applications and some higher-education programmes require B2.

It shares its skeleton with B1: five sections, the same point distribution, separate thresholds for written and oral parts. The differences are in the details, and they decide exam day: recordings play only once, the writing task offers two options and you choose one, reading asks about two short articles together, and in speaking both sides read the same discussion text.

Time pressure is a real factor at B2. Texts are long, listening gives no second chance, and a minute spent choosing the writing task does not come back. Preparation therefore has to train speed and strategy as much as knowledge.

Who needs it

Professional recognition (Anerkennung)

Nursing and many health professions require a B2 certificate; doctors additionally sit a C1-level professional language exam.

Ausbildung and skilled jobs

Many employers and vocational schools ask for B2; it is the standard threshold where B1 is not considered enough.

Before higher education

Some universities of applied sciences and preparatory courses accept applications with B2.

Exam structure

The table is the structure of the B2 mock exams on Level Exams, verified against the official telc Übungstest. Sections run in this order, one way only.

As at B1, two separate thresholds apply: the written sections combined and the oral section must each pass. The result report shows both groups.

Leseverstehen · Reading

Heading matching, shared questions on two short articles, and matching adverts to situations; texts are at newspaper and magazine level.

Sprachbausteine · Language Elements

Grammar choices in a gapped text, then gap filling from a word bank; each word once.

Hörverstehen · Listening

An interview, short news and a discussion; recordings play only once, with reading time beforehand.

Schriftlicher Ausdruck · Writing

You choose between Aufgabe A and Aufgabe B and write a text covering the stated points. The choice cannot be changed afterwards; decide quickly.

Mündlicher Ausdruck · Speaking

Talking about experiences, discussing a shared text and planning together; preparation time is given. On Level Exams your partner is an AI.

telc B2 sample questions with answers

One sample from each section, no sign-up needed: instructions in German as in the real exam, solutions in English. Enough to see the format; to feel the time pressure and get scored, take a full mock exam.

These samples follow the telc Deutsch B2 format. The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and the ÖSD Zertifikat B2 are separate exams from other institutions with different formats; if you are preparing for one of them, also look at that institution's own sample exam. The questions were written by Level Exams, are not taken from any official exam and do not appear in our mock exams.

  2. 2. Ihre Schwester singt gern und sucht einen Chor, der am Wochenende probt.→ ___
  3. 3. Eine Kollegin fliegt für drei Wochen zu ihrer Familie nach Kanada und sucht für diese Zeit eine gute Betreuung für ihren Hund.→ ___

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. c) Mieterverein Nordstadt — The situation has two conditions: the bill is for heating and water, i.e. service charges (Nebenkosten), and the check should be cheap. Ad c) names the 'Nebenkostenabrechnung' directly, says 'Unsere Fachleute prüfen Ihre Unterlagen', and advice is free for members (annual fee 65 euros). The distractor is e), the law firm: it also gives advice, but only on employment and family law, and the first meeting costs 95 euros, so both conditions fail.
  2. 2. x) keine passende Anzeige — Only one ad is about a choir: d), the Männerchor. It fails on two separate conditions: (1) it only wants male voices ('Männerchor', 'Sänger', 'Tenöre und Bässe'); (2) rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings ('jeden Dienstag von 19.30 bis 21.30 Uhr'), not at the weekend. No other ad offers a choir, so the answer is x. The trap: the word 'Singen' and the welcoming 'Notenkenntnisse sind nicht nötig' make the ad look suitable.
  3. 3. a) Pfotenhotel Waldblick — Your colleague is abroad for three weeks and her dog needs looking after during that time. Ad a) says 'Aufnahme ab einer Nacht, auch für mehrere Wochen' and 'rund um die Uhr betreut'. The distractor b), the dog school, is also about dogs, but it offers training, not boarding. Matching only the word 'Hund' leads to b; the need, not the topic, decides.

In the real exam this part has 10 situations and 12 ads (a–l); each correct match is worth 2.5 points. A situation may have no matching ad, in which case you mark x. First identify every condition in the situation (who, when, at what price), then check each one in the ad: one shared word is not enough. In the real exam, Reading and Language Elements together take 90 minutes.

  1. 1. Lücke 1→ ___
  2. 2. Lücke 2→ ___
  3. 3. Lücke 3→ ___
  4. 4. Lücke 4→ ___

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. b) AUFGRUND — '… gesetzlicher Vorgaben müssen … ausgetauscht werden': the gap needs a preposition followed by the genitive (gesetzlicher). The list has two genitive prepositions: aufgrund ('because of') and trotz ('despite'). The meters are replaced BECAUSE of legal rules. 'Trotz' fits the grammar but reverses the meaning; that is the trap in this gap.
  2. 2. c) ETWA — '… dauern pro Wohnung … zwanzig Minuten': the gap needs an adverb before the number. 'etwa' means 'about'. No other word in the list can sensibly stand before a number, so this gap can also be solved by elimination.
  3. 3. g) VERFÜGUNG — 'zur Verfügung stehen' (to be available) is a fixed expression. 'zur' (= zu der) contains an article, so a noun must follow; 'verfügbar' is an adjective and cannot stand here. A noun and an adjective from the same root are placed side by side: that is the trap.
  4. 4. e) ÜBERGEBEN — '… Sie bitte Ihren Wohnungsschlüssel einer Nachbarin …': 'Sie bitte' forms a polite imperative, so the gap needs the verb. Two candidates: übergeben and abgeben. 'abgeben' is separable; in this position it would have to split into 'geben Sie … ab', which does not fit one gap. 'übergeben' is inseparable: 'übergeben Sie' is correct.

In the real exam this part has 10 gaps and 15 words (a–o); each word fits only once, so 5 words are left over. Each correct gap is worth 1.5 points. First check which word class the gap needs (a noun after 'zur', a finite verb at the start of a clause), then check the meaning and cross out the word you used. In this sample each of the three leftover words (abgeben, trotz, verfügbar) almost fits a gap.

Listening (Hören)

Part 2

Sie hören ein Rundfunk-Interview. Entscheiden Sie bei den Aussagen 1–3: richtig oder falsch. Sie hören dieses Interview nur einmal.

Sie hören einen Ausschnitt aus einem Rundfunk-Interview mit einer Gebärdensprachdolmetscherin.

In the real exam the recording plays only once on its own and cannot be paused; here you can replay it as often as you like.

Transcript

  1. 1. Frau Holtkamp ist mit der Gebärdensprache aufgewachsen.Richtig / Falsch
  2. 2. Frau Holtkamp dolmetscht vor allem im Fernsehen.Richtig / Falsch
  3. 3. Bei längeren Terminen dolmetscht Frau Holtkamp jeweils zwanzig Minuten, dann übernimmt jemand anderes.Richtig / Falsch

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. Falsch — She learned sign language as a student, in an evening class, because of a deaf fellow student: 'Im Studium … Also habe ich einen Abendkurs besucht'. She also says 'bei uns zu Hause konnte niemand gebärden'. The trap is an assumption: that someone in this job learned sign language at home as a child. The recording says the opposite.
  2. 2. Falsch — 'Das Fernsehen ist nur ein kleiner Teil, auch wenn die meisten Leute nur das kennen.' Most of her work is at the doctor's, at parents' evenings and at public offices. The trap: you do hear the word 'Fernsehen', but hearing the word does not make the statement true; listen for 'nur ein kleiner Teil' in front of it.
  3. 3. Richtig — 'Längere Termine übernehmen wir immer zu zweit und wechseln uns alle zwanzig Minuten ab.' The statement gives the same information in other words: 'zu zweit' + 'abwechseln' = twenty minutes for her, then her colleague takes over. At B2, spotting the true statement often means recognising a paraphrase like this.

In the real exam the interview is much longer and there are 10 statements; the recording is played ONLY ONCE. Before it starts you have 60 seconds to read the statements: use them to mark the key word in each one (here 'aufgewachsen', 'vor allem', 'jeweils zwanzig Minuten'). Hearing a word from the statement does not make it true; check whether the meaning matches. Each statement is worth 2.5 points. You can replay the audio on this page, but in Level Exams' full mock exams it plays only once after the reading time, as in the real exam.

Model answer

Melis Arslan

In the real exam you first choose between Aufgabe A and Aufgabe B, and you need to decide quickly: the whole part takes 30 minutes. A is a (semi-)formal request for information, B a complaint. Cover at least three of the four points, or two plus an aspect of your own; write at least 150 words. The text is marked on three criteria (task completion, communicative form such as text type, greeting and linking, and formal accuracy), each on a four-level scale (A–D), for a total of 45 points. A text that misses the topic entirely scores zero on all three. This sample covers all four points. On Level Exams your text is scored by AI against the official criteria for this level.

Speaking (Sprechen)

Part 2

An opinion alone is not enough; add a reason with 'weil', 'da' or 'denn'. The task-completion criterion looks for exactly that.
  • Widersprechen „Da muss ich dir teilweise widersprechen: Für Pflegekräfte im Schichtdienst ist der Sonntag oft der einzige Tag, an dem sie in Ruhe einkaufen könnten.“ — 'teilweise' softens the disagreement; 'Das mag stimmen, aber …' is another good option. Addressing your partner as 'Sie' is always safe; if you use 'du', stay consistent.
  • Eigene Erfahrung einbringen „Als ich in Istanbul gewohnt habe, konnte ich auch sonntags einkaufen, und am Anfang habe ich das hier sehr vermisst.“ — The instructions ask for your own experience too. A past example with 'als' covers the task and naturally shows the past tenses.
  • Nachfragen „Wie stellst du dir das konkret vor – sollen dann alle Geschäfte öffnen oder nur die großen Supermärkte?“ — This is a discussion: reacting to your partner's argument and asking questions scores points, not just talking.
  • Kompromiss vorschlagen „Wie wäre es mit einem Mittelweg: einige verkaufsoffene Sonntage im Jahr, aber an allen anderen bleibt es ruhig?“ — A suggestion with Konjunktiv II: 'Wie wäre es mit …?', 'Man könnte …'. Polite and typical of B2.
  • Zusammenfassen „Wir sind uns also einig, dass die Beschäftigten geschützt werden müssen – wir sehen nur unterschiedlich, ob dafür ein generelles Verbot nötig ist.“ — A short joint summary shows you can manage the discussion. You don't have to agree; stating the difference clearly is fine too.

The real exam is taken in pairs and has three parts. In Teil 2 both candidates read the same short text; you first comment briefly on its content and then discuss it, bringing in your own experience and opinions. Here the text's claims are given in shortened form. There are 20 minutes of preparation time for Teil 2 and 3 before the exam. Each part is worth up to 25 points: 7 each for range of expression, task completion and formal accuracy, and 4 for pronunciation and intonation. To pass the oral exam you need at least 60% of the 75 points. On Level Exams an AI partner plays the other role and your speaking is scored against the official criteria for this level.

Which exams exist at B2: telc, Goethe and ÖSD

B2 is the level of professional recognition and job applications. Alongside the three general B2 certificates telc also has profession-specific versions; ask the body you are applying to which one it wants.

telc Deutsch B2

We simulate this format

One sitting; the written sections and the oral section carry separate thresholds. telc also has profession-specific versions (B2 Beruf, B2 Pflege, B2·C1 Medizin) built on different content.

The B2 mocks here follow the GENERAL telc B2 format, not the profession-specific versions.

Goethe-Zertifikat B2

We simulate this format

Modular: reading (5 parts, 30 items, 65 min), listening (4 parts, 30 items), writing (a forum post and a formal message, 75 min) and speaking (a presentation and a discussion, 15 min preparation). Each module is scored out of 100, passed at 60 % and certified separately.

We have separate mock exams in this format: the Goethe B2 mocks follow the task types and module-based scoring of all four modules.

ÖSD Zertifikat B2

We simulate this format

ÖSD uses its own format: the written (reading, listening, writing) and oral modules are passed separately, and reading and listening have their own minimums. In listening you complete a table; in speaking you choose one of three photos and talk about it.

We have separate mock exams in this format, including the table task, the photo choice and ÖSD's own scoring.

For recognition of a healthcare profession the federal states accept B2 certificates from ALTE members; some states and chambers prefer telc's profession-specific versions. The mocks here are general B2 — not B2 Pflege or B2·C1 Medizin.

How Level Exams prepares you for this exam

We do not hand you practice questions; we put you through the exam. Our B2 mock exams were checked section by section against the official telc Übungstest: timing, order, number of items, points and the pass rule are the same as on exam day. Nothing should surprise you there.

Real timing, locked order

Sections open in the real exam order and there is no going back. The clock runs on the server, so closing the browser does not pause it. You get a warning five minutes before the end, and the answer sheet saves every ten seconds.

Listening that behaves like the exam

Recordings were produced with natural German voices and distinct speakers. They play exactly as many times as in the exam, cannot be paused, and the instructions and answer pauses are inside the audio, including the 'Nummer eins' announcements.

Real evaluation for writing and speaking

Your text and your recorded answers are scored by AI against the criteria telc uses at this level; you get a score per criterion, corrections and an explanation in your language. Each text is scored twice and averaged, so there is no random grading.

Result report and weak topics

After the exam you see points per section, whether you passed, and which topics cost you points. Weaknesses that repeat across attempts are flagged separately, so what to study next is a measurement, not a guess.

How to prepare for B2

  1. 1

Be there from the first second in listening

The recording plays once; a missed sentence does not return. Mark the items during reading time and look at the questions, not the answer sheet, while listening.

  2. 2

Choose the writing task in one minute

Choose by the vocabulary you have, not by sympathy for the topic. There is no way back after choosing.

  3. 3

    Structure the opinion piece

Introduction, two arguments, a counter-argument and a conclusion, one paragraph each. Examiners look for structure.

  4. 4

Produce the opposing view in the discussion

Staying one-sided costs points in speaking; keep 'einerseits… andererseits…' ready.

  5. 5

    Skim long texts

Read the questions first, then the paragraph openings; go into detail only where a question demands it.

Frequently asked questions

›What is the biggest difference between B2 and B1?

The point skeleton is the same, but listening plays only once, the writing task is a choice, and texts are clearly longer.

›Can I write both writing tasks?

No, only one is scored. On Level Exams the choice is also fixed, so you practise deciding quickly as in the real exam.

›Is B2 enough for health professions?

Usually yes for nursing and similar professions; for doctors the federal states additionally require a C1-level professional language exam.

›What is the pass rule?

The written sections combined and the oral section must each reach a set percentage; the figures are shown in the table.

›Does Level Exams issue a certificate?

No. Results are presented as a result report; the official certificate comes from licensed telc exam centres.

›How long does the telc B2 exam take, and what is the exam pattern?

The written sections run back to back in one sitting; speaking is a separate session, with preparation time at some levels. The order and timing of the sections are in the table above with their real values, and the 'Exam flow and timing' page shows all levels side by side.

›How much does the telc B2 exam cost?

The fee is set by the exam centre and varies by city and country; centres in Turkey advertise roughly €190 for A1 in 2026, higher levels somewhat more, and centres in Germany vary widely. Check the centre's own page for the current figure. Level Exams mock exams are separate from that fee, and the first one is free.

›How long is a telc certificate valid?

The certificate itself does not expire. Visa authorities, however, usually require a certificate whose exam date is not older than one year; check the current requirement of the office you are applying to.

›Where can I find a telc B2 sample paper (PDF)?

The official practice exam (Übungstest) can be downloaded free from telc's website as a PDF with audio files. This page also has a free B2 sample PDF made by Level Exams (with answer sheet and answer key) and sample questions with solutions. With a PDF you have to keep time, resist pausing and mark it yourself. The B2 mock exams on Level Exams put the same exam pattern in your browser with real timing, uninterrupted audio and automatic scoring; the first one is free.
