telc Deutsch C1 exam

Advanced academic and professional German. Uneven point distribution, grade bands, a paired speaking exam; mock exams in the real format.

telc Deutsch C1 tests whether you can understand long and abstract texts, catch implicit meaning, and speak and write in a structured, fluent way about academic or professional topics. University applications, academic programmes and senior professions ask for this level.

The structure differs from B1/B2: there are still five sections, but the total and the section weights follow a different skeleton, and the result is given as pass/fail plus a five-step grade band (sehr gut, gut, befriedigend, ausreichend, nicht bestanden). The first reading part is placing given sentences into gaps in a text, with distractor sentences.

The speaking exam is paired: one candidate gives a presentation, the other summarises it and asks questions, then both discuss. On Level Exams the partner is an AI that gives a fixed presentation; your tasks are the same as in the real exam.

Who needs it

University application

German universities mostly ask for 'telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule'; the structure of the general C1 is largely the same. Confirm with your university which certificate is accepted.

Senior academic and professional roles

Research, teaching and management expect C1; for doctors the professional language exam is also at C1 level.

Towards language teaching and translation

C1 is the minimum threshold for professions that work with the language.

Exam structure

The table is the structure of the C1 mock exams on Level Exams, verified against the official telc Übungstest. Points are not spread evenly; grade bands are shown as on the official certificate.

Sentence-gap matching (with distractors), questions on a long article, and matching opinion texts.

Sprachbausteine · Language Elements

Grammar and vocabulary choices in a long text; four-option items with fine distinctions.

Hörverstehen · Listening

A long interview and lecture excerpts; reading time before each part, recordings play the stated number of times.

Schriftlicher Ausdruck · Writing

Choosing one of two themes and writing a structured, reasoned text; there is a word target.

Mündlicher Ausdruck · Speaking

A presentation, summarising the partner's presentation and asking questions, and a discussion based on a quotation. Preparation time is given.

telc C1 sample questions with answers

One sample from each section, no sign-up needed: instructions in German as in the real exam, solutions in English. Enough to see the format; to feel the time pressure and get scored, take a full mock exam.

These samples follow the general telc Deutsch C1 format. telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, taken for university admission, has a similar points structure but a different subject area and some different tasks; Goethe-Zertifikat C1 and ÖSD C1 are separate exams with their own formats. The questions were written by Level Exams, are not taken from any official exam and do not appear in our mock exams.

Reading (Lesen)

Part 1

  1. 1. Lücke 1→ ___
  2. 2. Lücke 2→ ___
  3. 3. Lücke 3→ ___

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. c) Das überschüssige Wasser sucht sich dann seinen eigenen Weg. — Before the gap we learn that the sewers can no longer take the water; after it, the consequences are listed ('Keller laufen voll…'). 'Das überschüssige Wasser' points back to exactly that excess water and 'dann' ties it to the moment of overflow, so the sentence bridges to the list. Distractor (b) also refers to the water ('Diese Wassermassen') and therefore looks right at first, but 'problemlos ableiten' contradicts the flooding described next. At C1 a matching reference word is not enough; the logic must hold too.
  2. 2. a) Ihr Grundgedanke ist einfach: Regenwasser soll nicht mehr möglichst schnell abgeleitet, sondern aufgefangen werden. — The 'ihr' in 'Ihr Grundgedanke' needs a feminine antecedent, and the previous sentence ends with 'die Schwammstadt'. The sentence states the idea (catch the rain instead of draining it fast), and the next sentence lists concrete examples (green roofs, hollows, permeable paving). General idea followed by concrete examples is a very common pattern in this task.
  3. 3. e) So überzeugend das Prinzip klingt, so mühsam ist seine Umsetzung. — The third paragraph changes direction: the previous one described the benefits, and after the gap come the difficulties ('teuer', 'dauert oft Jahrzehnte'). The pattern 'So überzeugend …, so mühsam …' sets up exactly this contrast, and 'seine Umsetzung' refers back to 'das Prinzip'. Distractor (d) fits the topic, but 'Außerdem' adds another advantage and 'mit geringem Aufwand' contradicts 'teuer' in the next sentence. Always check which way the connector points: addition or contrast.

In the real exam the text has 6 gaps and 8 sentences (a–h); two sentences do not fit anywhere. Each correct answer is worth 2 points. Reading and Sprachbausteine together take 90 minutes. For each gap read the sentence before and after it: pronouns (ihr, seine), demonstratives (dieses, diese) and connectors (außerdem, so … so) usually decide the answer. Distractors fit the topic but break the line of argument.

Language elements (Sprachbausteine)

Part 1

    • b) darauf
    • c) davon
    • d) dafür
  2. 2. Lücke 2
    • a) damit

    • c) sobald
    • d) bis
  3. 3. Lücke 3
    • a) spielt
    • b) nimmt
    • c) trägt
    • d) leistet
  4. 4. Lücke 4
    • a) verschärfen
    • b) hervorrufen
    • c) eindämmen
    • d) einräumen

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. b) darauf — Verb + preposition pattern: 'auf etwas hinweisen' (to point something out). Because the preposition points ahead to a 'dass' clause, it becomes 'darauf'. The 'hin' at the end of the clause is the clue: 'weisen … darauf hin'. 'daran' (denken an), 'davon' (ausgehen von) and 'dafür' (sorgen für) belong to other verbs; this item type tests whether you know which preposition the verb takes.
  2. 2. d) bis — The 'so lange' in the main clause needs its partner: 'so lange …, bis …' (until). So the word before the gap decides the answer. 'damit' expresses purpose (the insects do not circle in order to fall), while 'nachdem' and 'sobald' express sequence but do not combine with 'so lange'.
  3. 3. a) spielt — Fixed noun-verb combination: 'eine Rolle spielen' (to play a role). 'leistet' is the most dangerous distractor because 'einen Beitrag leisten' (to make a contribution) is close in meaning, but 'Rolle' only goes with 'spielen'. In such gaps, look at the noun and ask which verb it forms a fixed phrase with.
  4. 4. c) eindämmen — Word choice: all four verbs collocate with 'Problem', but they mean different things. 'mit einfachen Mitteln' and the solutions listed afterwards (downward-facing, dimmable lamps) show that the problem can be reduced: 'eindämmen' (to contain). 'verschärfen' means to make worse, 'hervorrufen' to cause, 'einräumen' to admit. Here context decides, not grammar.

In the real exam one text has 22 gaps, each with four options (a–d); each correct answer is worth 1 point. Grammar and vocabulary items are mixed: verb + preposition patterns, connectors and their correlates (so lange … bis), fixed phrases and words with similar meanings. Read the whole sentence before looking at the options; the clue is often a few words away from the gap.

Sie hören einen Vortrag über virtuelles Wasser. Vor Ihnen liegen die Folien der Präsentation.

In the real exam the recording plays only once on its own and cannot be paused; here you can replay it as often as you like.

Transcript

Answer and explanation

  1. 1. Anbau der Bohnen — Evidence: 'weder in die Tasse noch in die Maschine, sondern … beim Anbau der Bohnen'. The speaker first rules out two wrong answers; the right one comes after 'sondern'. '130 Liter' is also on the slide, but it answers a different question: the gap asks where the water is used, not how much. 'Anbau' alone is enough; notes do not need full sentences.
  2. 2. Herkunft des Wassers — Evidence: 'Entscheidend ist nämlich weniger die Menge als die Herkunft des Wassers'. The trap is the 'weniger X als Y' structure: the first word you hear ('Menge') is not the answer; what matters comes after 'als'. Catching this pattern on a single listening is a typical C1 challenge. 'Herkunft' or 'Wasser aus Regionen mit Wassermangel' carry the same meaning.
  3. 3. saisonale Produkte aus der Region — Evidence: 'Wirksamer ist es, … saisonale Produkte aus der Region zu wählen'. The distractor comes just before: 'Ein kompletter Verzicht auf importierte Lebensmittel' is mentioned but rejected as 'weder realistisch noch sinnvoll'. Not every option a speaker mentions is their recommendation; listen for evaluative words ('wirksamer', 'weder … noch').

In the real exam this part has 10 gaps and the talk is played only once; you get one minute to read the slides beforehand. Each correct note is worth 2 points. At C1 all three listening parts are heard only once. Use the reading time to decide what kind of information each gap needs (place, reason, recommendation, number) and be ready for patterns like 'nicht … sondern' and 'weniger … als'. Keywords are enough. On this page you can replay the audio freely; in Level Exams' full mock exams it plays once, as in the real exam.

Writing (Schreiben)

Part 1

Führen Sie Argumente an, legen Sie Vor- und Nachteile dar und begründen Sie am Schluss Ihre eigene Position. Schreiben Sie einen Text von etwa 350 Wörtern.

Thema 1

Points to cover

  • Argumente zur Frage anführen, ob Sechzehnjährige bei Bundestagswahlen wählen dürfen sollten
  • Vor- und Nachteile einer Senkung des Wahlalters darlegen
  • Am Schluss die eigene Position begründen

Model answer

In the real exam you choose one of two topics; Thema 1 is shown here. A text of about 350 words is expected and you have 70 minutes. It is scored on four criteria: task appropriateness, grammatical and spelling accuracy, linguistic repertoire and communicative form (connectors, coherence); each is worth up to 12 points, 48 in total. If the text misses the topic, all four criteria score zero. The two statements on the task sheet are only there to give you ideas; develop your own arguments instead of copying them. The structure of the model answer (introduction → arguments for → arguments against → your reasoned position) is a safe framework. On Level Exams your text is scored by AI against the official C1 criteria.

Speaking (Sprechen)

Part 1

Sample answer

  • Einleitung: Thema vorstellen „Ich möchte heute über einen Beruf sprechen, der meiner Meinung nach stark unterschätzt wird: die Altenpflege.“ — Naming the topic and adding a thesis straight away ('stark unterschätzt') gives the listener a reason to follow. Alternative: 'In meiner Präsentation geht es um …'
  • Einleitung: den Aufbau nennen „Zunächst gehe ich kurz auf die aktuelle Situation ein, dann nenne ich einige Gründe, und zum Schluss sage ich, was sich aus meiner Sicht ändern müsste.“ — Announcing the structure helps the listener, and the partner who has to summarise you; it feeds directly into coherence.
A comparison with 'während' shows the complex sentence structure expected at C1. Alternative: 'Im Gegensatz zu früher …'
  • Einschränkung „Allerdings muss man einräumen, dass der Beruf körperlich und seelisch sehr belastend sein kann.“ — Conceding a point ('einräumen', 'zugegebenermaßen') does not weaken your view; it shows nuanced thinking.
  • Schluss: Fazit ziehen „Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass dieser Beruf nur dann attraktiver wird, wenn sich Bezahlung und Arbeitszeiten deutlich verbessern.“ — A clear concluding sentence signals that you have finished. Alternative: 'Abschließend möchte ich betonen, dass …'

In the real exam you have 20 minutes to prepare. You choose one of two topics and give a presentation of about three minutes; then your partner summarises it and asks questions, the roles switch, and the exam ends with a discussion of about six minutes. The content of your presentation is scored separately (up to 6 points); fluency, repertoire, grammar and pronunciation are assessed across the whole speaking section. Do not write a script while preparing, just keywords. On Level Exams an AI partner plays the other candidate: it gives its own presentation, you summarise it and ask questions, then you discuss together; your speaking is scored against the official C1 criteria.

Which exams exist at C1: telc, Goethe and ÖSD

At C1 another distinction matters before the choice of provider: within the same provider, the general C1 and the university version are different exams, and universities usually want the second one.

telc Deutsch C1

We simulate this format

One sitting, five sections. telc also has C1 Hochschule and C1 Beruf versions: the scoring frame is the same, the world the texts come from is different.

The C1 mocks here follow the GENERAL telc C1 format — not the Hochschule version.

Goethe-Zertifikat C1

We simulate this format

Modular: reading (4 parts, 30 items, 65 min), listening (4 parts, 30 items, about 40 min), writing (a forum post and a formal or semi-formal message, 75 min) and speaking (a presentation and a discussion, 20 min preparation). Each module is scored out of 100 and passed separately at 60%; the task types do not map onto telc C1.

We have separate mock exams in this format: the Goethe C1 mocks follow the task types and module-based scoring of all four modules.

ÖSD Zertifikat C1

We simulate this format

ÖSD uses its own format: the written module (reading, listening, writing) and the oral module are passed separately, and reading, listening and writing each have their own minimum. In reading you insert paragraphs into a text and fill 15 gaps with one word each, in listening you complete the notes of a lecture, and speaking is an individual exam: negotiating on the phone, arguing over two photos and giving a short presentation.

We have separate mock exams in this format, with ÖSD's own task types, timings and scoring.

If you are applying to a university, a general C1 is not enough at most of them: telc C1 Hochschule, TestDaF, DSH or Goethe C2 is required. Read your programme's language requirements before you register, so you do not pay two exam fees.

How Level Exams prepares you for this exam

We do not hand you practice questions; we put you through the exam. Our C1 mock exams were checked section by section against the official telc Übungstest: timing, order, number of items, points and the pass rule are the same as on exam day. Nothing should surprise you there.

Real timing, locked order

Sections open in the real exam order and there is no going back. The clock runs on the server, so closing the browser does not pause it. You get a warning five minutes before the end, and the answer sheet saves every ten seconds.

Listening that behaves like the exam

Recordings were produced with natural German voices and distinct speakers. They play exactly as many times as in the exam, cannot be paused, and the instructions and answer pauses are inside the audio, including the 'Nummer eins' announcements.

Real evaluation for writing and speaking

Your text and your recorded answers are scored by AI against the criteria telc uses at this level; you get a score per criterion, corrections and an explanation in your language. Each text is scored twice and averaged, so there is no random grading.

How to prepare for C1

  1. 1

In sentence-gap matching, look at connectors

The connector, pronoun and tense of the sentences before and after the gap narrow the candidates to two; distractors usually fail on tense or subject agreement.

  2. 2

    Thesis, antithesis, synthesis in writing

Examiners look for a chain of reasoning: two paragraphs of argument, one counter-argument, a clear conclusion.

  3. 3

A three-minute skeleton for the presentation

Introduction, two main points, an example, conclusion; practise the skeleton, not a script, and it fits any topic.

  4. 4

Summarising is a skill of its own

Summarising the partner's presentation in three sentences and asking one question is a separate task; listen to podcasts and summarise them in three sentences.

  5. 5

    Grow academic vocabulary systematically

The vocabulary cards have a C1 pack; one pack a day, revision before the exam.

Frequently asked questions

›Are telc C1 and telc C1 Hochschule the same?

The structure is largely the same; the Hochschule version uses academic themes and is preferred for university applications. Level Exams simulates the general C1 format; confirm which certificate your institution requires.

›What do the grade bands mean?

Depending on your overall percentage you receive 'sehr gut', 'gut', 'befriedigend', 'ausreichend' or 'nicht bestanden'; the thresholds are shown in the table.

›Is the speaking exam done alone?

In the real exam it is paired. On Level Exams the partner is an AI; your tasks are the same.

›Is C1 enough for doctors?

The general C1 certificate is a prerequisite; the federal states additionally require a professional language exam (Fachsprachprüfung).

›Does Level Exams issue a certificate?

No. Results are presented as a result report; the official certificate comes from licensed telc exam centres.

›How long does the telc C1 exam take, and what is the exam pattern?

The written sections run back to back in one sitting; speaking is a separate session, with preparation time at some levels. The order and timing of the sections are in the table above with their real values, and the 'Exam flow and timing' page shows all levels side by side.

›How much does the telc C1 exam cost?

The fee is set by the exam centre and varies by city and country; centres in Turkey advertise roughly €190 for A1 in 2026, higher levels somewhat more, and centres in Germany vary widely. Check the centre's own page for the current figure. Level Exams mock exams are separate from that fee, and the first one is free.

›How long is a telc certificate valid?

The certificate itself does not expire. Visa authorities, however, usually require a certificate whose exam date is not older than one year; check the current requirement of the office you are applying to.

›Where can I find a telc C1 sample paper (PDF)?

The official practice exam (Übungstest) can be downloaded free from telc's website as a PDF with audio files. This page also has a free C1 sample PDF made by Level Exams (with answer sheet and answer key) and sample questions with solutions. With a PDF you have to keep time, resist pausing and mark it yourself. The C1 mock exams on Level Exams put the same exam pattern in your browser with real timing, uninterrupted audio and automatic scoring; the first one is free.
